Tips for fathers who want to gain custody

On Behalf of Melinda L. Singer, Esq. | Nov 6, 2020 | Child Custody |

As a father who does not have custody of their child, it can be heartbreaking to know that they are spending the vast majority of their time with the other parent. While it can be a challenge to gain custody, especially if the other parent is making it difficult for you, it’s always possible if you can show that parenting time would be in the best interests of your child’s emotional needs.

In general, child custody courts believe that children benefit when they have a positive relationship with both of their parents. The following are some things that you should ensure you are doing before trying to gain custody of your child.

Build a strong relationship with them

It can be difficult to build a strong relationship with your child if the other parent is refusing to let you see them. However, you should be proactive and try your best to build a positive relationship with them. For example, you could try video calling them once per day or visiting them on scheduled visits at the other parent’s home regularly.

Pay child support

Whether you have a formal or informal child support arrangement in place, prioritize these payments and always pay on time.

Prepare a space for your child

If you want to have custody of your child, you should be able to show that you have a stable lifestyle and a safe home where they will feel comfortable. Make sure that they would have their own private space in your home where they could feel comfortable and part of the household. Depending on the child’s age, you should also make sure that you have the right equipment, whether that is child seats for the car or appropriate beds for the child’s age.

If you are a parent but you do not currently have custody, make sure that you look into your options for gaining custody in the future.
