Is it time to alter your child custody schedule? 4 reasons

On Behalf of | Jul 31, 2024 | Child Custody |

A child custody schedule determines how you and your co-parent are responsible for caring for your child.

You may need to have a clear reason to change your current child custody schedule. Here are a few examples:

1. Your work or school schedule has changed

Work and school schedules are difficult to control. Your work or school schedule could suddenly change and conflict with your current child custody schedule. This could be an issue that you and your co-parent have at any time. To fix this issue, you may need to request an altered custody schedule.

2. You have new medical problems

You may have recently developed a medical condition that has hospitalized you or made it difficult to care for your child. To help ensure your child is getting the care they need, you may need to alter your custody schedule so that your co-parent has more time with your child. You may also need to ask for your co-parent to bring your child to you if your condition is debilitating.

3. Your child needs special attention

Your child could have developed a physical or cognitive condition. This medical condition may require you or your co-parent to take on extra time with your child. For example, if your child has a cognitive disability, they may need extra special attention to help with their school studies. Or, a child with a physical disability may need a parent to provide around-the-clock care.

4. You are planning on moving

You may be planning on moving. Maybe you found a better job or living situation. However, this new home is far away from your co-parent. You may need to alter your custody schedule to accommodate the distance between you and your co-parent.

Changing a child custody schedule can take time. You may need to seek legal guidance to help alter your current child custody schedule.
