3 things couples fight about that can lead to divorce

On Behalf of Melinda L. Singer, Esquire | Apr 2, 2024 | Divorce |

Every couple argues; it’s a normal part of any relationship. However, some arguments can chip away at the foundation of a relationship, leaving cracks that can widen over time. If these disagreements aren’t addressed constructively, they can eventually lead to divorce.

If your marriage is hanging on a thread, it can help to know whether other couples are also fighting about the same issues that you may be facing in your union.

Financial disagreements

Money is a major source of stress for many couples. Disagreements about spending habits, saving goals or debt can quickly turn into heated arguments. One partner might be a spender, while the other is a saver. This fundamental difference in financial philosophy can lead to feelings of resentment and a lack of trust.

Unfair division of labor

Household chores are another battleground for many couples. Feeling like you’re constantly picking up the slack can be incredibly frustrating. This is especially true when one partner works outside the home, and the other doesn’t. The resentment caused by an unequal division of labor can fester and erode the sense of partnership in a relationship.

Communication breakdown

When couples struggle to communicate effectively, misunderstandings and frustration become inevitable. Passive-aggressive behavior, stonewalling (withdrawing from conversation) and constant criticism can all create a toxic environment.

Remember, disagreements are a normal part of any relationship. The key is to fight fair. That means focusing on the issue at hand, avoiding personal attacks and being open to compromise. With that said, if you find yourself thinking about divorce due to the discord in your marriage, it can help to seek legal counsel to help you decide if it’s the best course of action.
